Visit to Savannah Aircraft: ROTAX 916 Installation Testing & Coastal Test Flight

Last week, our team had the opportunity to visit Savannah Aircraft to support a series of critical installation checks and validation tests on their ROTAX 916 installation. The visit was both productive and memorable—culminating in a coastal test flight along the beachfront that showcased both the aircraft and engine in their intended operating environment.

Supporting a Robust ROTAX 916 Installation

The ROTAX 916 represents a significant step forward in certified and high‑performance aviation powerplants, and as such, its installation demands close attention to detail. Our on‑site support focused on evaluating real‑world installation behaviour, system pressures, and thermal performance—ensuring everything operates well within recommended parameters.

Cylinder Wall Temperature Testing

One of the primary tasks during our visit was cylinder wall temperature testing. Monitoring cylinder wall temperatures provides invaluable insight into combustion efficiency, cooling effectiveness, and airflow management around the engine.

These tests help identify:

  • Uneven cooling between cylinders
  • Potential airflow restrictions
  • Early indicators of localised thermal stress

The data collected confirmed stable and predictable temperatures across the operating range, pointing to an effective cooling layout and a well-considered installation.

Crankcase Pressure Testing

We also conducted a crankcase pressure test to assess internal engine breathing and ventilation performance. Correct crankcase pressure is essential for:

  • Effective oil control
  • Seal and gasket longevity
  • Minimising oil misting and blow‑by

The results aligned well with expectations, showing healthy pressure behaviour under operating conditions.

Oil Pump Suction Test

Another key focus area was the oil pump suction test. On turbocharged engines such as the ROTAX 916, oil system integrity is critical—particularly during transient power changes and sustained high-load operation.

This test allowed verification of:

  • Oil pickup efficiency
  • Suction‑side restrictions
  • Correct plumbing and routing

Suction performance was solid, with no indications of cavitation or flow instability.

General Installation Observations

In addition to formal testing, we made several general installation observations, reviewing:

  • Hose routing and support
  • Sensor and electrical placement
  • Maintenance accessibility
  • Heat management around turbocharger and exhaust components

These small but important details often have a significant impact on long‑term reliability and serviceability.

Beachfront Test Flight

The visit concluded with a test flight along the beachfront, providing an excellent opportunity to observe the ROTAX 916 installation in real operational conditions. Flying in the coastal environment allowed evaluation of:

  • Engine response and smoothness
  • Thermal stability in sustained cruise
  • Overall aircraft performance and handling

The flight reaffirmed the installation’s robustness, with the engine delivering smooth, confident power throughout the profile. Beyond the technical validation, the beachfront route made for an unforgettable experience and a fitting close to a highly productive visit.

A Productive Collaboration

Overall, the visit to Savannah Aircraft was both technically valuable and highly enjoyable. The ROTAX 916 installation demonstrated careful planning, strong engineering practices, and a solid understanding of the engine’s operational requirements.

We appreciate the opportunity to work closely with the Savannah Aircraft team and look forward to continued collaboration as this aircraft progresses through further testing and into regular operation.
